The intro cinematic for Project Cars 3, when compared to those of Project Cars 1 and 2, perfectly advertises the major paradigm shift that clearly occurred between this and the previous two games. Slow methodical shots of the mechanical inner workings of each vehicle are replaced by action shots of cars maneuvering their way to victory. The ethereal soundtrack quickly makes way for rock music and the once plentiful showcase of vehicle variety becomes a display of cosmetics. While Project Cars 3 is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, it takes a drastic turn away from any machinations of being a true simulation. At times it feels as though this game's only real crime is being called Project Cars 3.
The driving mechanics of Project Cars 3 are comfortable to say the least. Slightly Mad Studios has placed a ton of attention on making the cars drive well on controller as well as on steering wheel. This is a first for the series, and is why a lot of new players will likely flock to this iteration of the game. For the most part, the cars feel grounded while never becoming so realistic that they aren't any fun to take around the track. This isn't to say that the game is easy, however. The physics provide players with a fair challenge, just one that isn't determined on hundreds of hours of methodical practice with each vehicle, as can be found in truer sim titles.
The vehicle selection on offer is large but less varied than in previous games. There is a clear focus on Road Cars, GT, and Rally vehicles. Formula 1 is largely neglected this time around, and things like Karting are non-existent. Because the intricacies of racing such as tire degradation and fuel management have been stripped from the experience, choosing which car to drive is more a matter of looks and minor handling changes. For instance, F1 cars maintain their Kart-like ability to brake quickly and handle sharp turns, but have lost their tendency to lose traction when pushed past the limit. Drifting should never be possible in an F1 car, but this was pulled off easily in Project Cars 3.
The track selection is excellent and features many Motorsport favorites such as Linden Hill, Monza, Nordschleife, and Daytona. These tracks all race well, but lack the visual fidelity of the previous games. Graphics on the whole have taken a noticeable dive compared to Project Cars 2. Particularly at night, surfaces appear to be flat and lack lighting variation. Vehicles look pretty good in the garage, but on the road, lose a lot of their luster. There is an added Photo Mode this time around, but it is abysmal. In solo sessions, shots of the player's vehicle look alright, but the background is horrifically blurred beyond that of simple motion. When attempting to capture a shot of multiple cars, only a select few will be in focus, while the rest of the scene will be obscured like a painting. It is nearly impossible to get a perfect shot in this mode. Players who wish to get decent screenshots will need to take them mid-action to avoid the majority of lighting and background issues.
Project Cars 3 appears to want to be a different kind of racer than the previous two games in the series. This isn't entirely a problem, and the game presented is quite enthralling to play. The issue is that while games like Forza and Froza: Horizon separate themselves with titles that express their shift in principles, Project Cars 3 presents itself as a continuation of a series, while turning its back on the broad efforts of realism brought forth by previous titles. Players who want something fun and engaging, without all the tedious practice of simulators, will love this game wholeheartedly. Controller racers finally can enjoy the wider variety of cars in one title, and graphical improvements and AI tweaks would make this a perfect Simcade racer. Fans of Project Cars 1 and 2, however, will likely have to stick with those games going forward.
Compromises that's pretty much where it's at with slightly mad's latest iteration of project cars. A significant part of this mod tries to normalize the cockpit view to that of the other camera angles in terms of brightness and exposure but it is a best effort at most. (please check the screenshots) Next to that there are a number of tweaks to effects like dof, rain (mist), high speed vignette and the slightly annoying red flash when crashing. If you do not like specific tweaks please see 'further tweaking' for disabling specific shader tweaks.
